Attesting Australian Documents for the UAE

If you need to use your Australian documents in the UAE, you will need to have them attested. This is a process to validate a document issued in one country for use in another one. Whether you have an Australian degree or other qualification, a birth, marriage or death certificate, or any other personal or company document originating from Australia.

How does it work?

Attesting a document issued in Australia can be complex, especially as the requirements change depending on who you need to present it to and exactly what type of document it is. Fortunately, most documents follow a similar pattern which we’ve broken down for you. There are however some situations where things are a little different, so if you want to make sure that you are fully informed, speak to one of our advisers and we’ll look at your individual circumstances free of charge.

Official Verification

In some cases, your first step is to get your document verified by one official body or another (e.g. My eQuals Australia). In the case of an educational certificate, the institution that issued it is required to verify that the qualification is valid. In most cases we can handle the verification for you, however there are certain universities that require the document owners do the verification themselves.

Certification by Australian Notary Public

Before any document can be presented to the Australian government for legalisation, it must first be certified by a practicing Australian Notary Public. In this stage, the Notary will check the legitimacy of the document(s) being presented to them. They will then attach a notarial cover sheet to certified copies of the original documents and add their official seal.

Australian Government Certification

Once a document has been notarised, it is then presented to the Australian Department for Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT). Their office will check that the seal and signature of the Notary Public matches their official record and certifies it accordingly. Once certified, they will add their stamp to the certification.

UAE Embassy Attestation

The final step in Australia is for the document to be attested by the UAE Embassy in Barton, a district of Canberra, ACT. An official UAE-government sticker and seal is attached alongside the certification by DFAT during this stage. This attestation sticker confirms to the UAE authorities that the document has gone through all the necessary steps in Australia.

MoFA Attestation (UAE)

Once the document has reached the UAE, it requires a further attestation stamp by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE which validates that your document has been processed correctly in the UK. Some employers make arrangements to handle this for you, so you should check whether this needs completing by you or not.

Translation from English into Arabic

In certain circumstances, your document may also require translation into Arabic. Again, your employer may handle this for you so best to check. If required, the whole document and its relevant stamps are translated from English into Arabic by a recognised certified translator. Once the translation has been done, then everything has been completed to make it fully useable within the UAE.

Attestation Notes

  • Arabic translation is usually required for use in all emirates other than Dubai, as well as if the document is to be used within one of the Dubai Free Zone authorities including (but not limited to) the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC).
  • The UAE Embassy in Australia will not accept any documents where the course of study was done outside of Australia. This is applicable for schools and universities with satellite campuses. Even if it’s not mentioned on the qualification that the study took place on a satellite campus, this will still be made known through the verification process.
  • For any Power of Attorney (PoA) to be attested, these must be signed in the presence of a DFA-registered solicitor to be valid. They cannot be witnessed by anyone else.
  • The DFAT (Apostille Stamp), DFAT (Australian Embassy Consular stamp) and DFAT (Legalisation stamp) all looks very similar, but you will see the difference by looking carefully at each stamp.
