Attesting Italian Documents for the UAE

Before you can use documents from Italy in the UAE, you will need to have them attested. Whether it is an degree qualification, a birth, marriage or death certificate, or in fact any other Italian personal or company document, let us take the hassle away for you and process this for you.

How does it work?

Attesting an Italian document can be complicated, especially as the process is different depending upon the type of document you have, and who you need to present it to. In many cases the document may also need to be translated into English or Arabic. We’ve outlined below the usual process that documents need to go through, but bear in mind that this can vary according to what you need to attest. Notarisation & Certification

Most documents start by needing to be notarised and certified. During this stage, a notary public will check the document is legitimate and sign & stamp it accordingly.
Initial Certification

Translation from Italian to English

For any document that is written in Italian, it will need to be translated into English. The original document is bound together with the translation, and it is this bundle that is attested. For qualifications, birth, marriage or death certificates that are already in English, this step is not required. Asseveration of the translation will also take place which is the process to swear that the translation is legal and accurate.

Italian Legalisation

Before documents can be presented to the UAE Embassy in Rome, most need to have been legalised by the Italian government, and stamped that the previous step has been completed correctly. In Italy this is applied by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, known locally as the Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale. In some cases, instead of an Apostille, documents will alternatively be processed with the signature of a national or regional court official, or be certified by the Chamber of Commerce.

UAE Embassy Attestation

The final step in Italy is to have the document stamped, known as attested, by the UAE Embassy in Rome. During this stage an official UAE-government sticker and seal is applied to the document. This confirms to the authorities in the UAE that the document has completed all the required steps in Italy.

MoFA Attestation (UAE)

Once the document has reached the UAE, it requires a further attestation stamp by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE which validates that your document has been processed correctly in the UK. Some employers make arrangements to handle this for you, so you should check whether this needs completing by you or not.

Translation from English into Arabic

In certain circumstances, your document may also require translation into Arabic. Again, your employer may handle this for you so best to check. If required, the whole document and its relevant stamps are translated from English into Arabic by a recognised certified translator. Once the translation has been done, then everything has been completed to make it fully useable within the UAE.

Attestation Notes

  • Documents that need to be processed by the Italian courts system will either need to be signed and certified by a representative of the national (Procura della Republica) or regional (Procura della Prefettura) court. These documents can be presented directly to the UAE Embassy in Rome and do not require an Apostille.
  • Some commercial documents will require certification by the Italian Chamber of Commerce (Camera di Commercio). These documents do not require an Apostille and can be presented directly to the UAE Embassy in Rome.
  • Arabic translation is usually required for use in all emirates other than Dubai, and also if the document is to be used within one of the Dubai Free Zone authorities including (but not limited to) the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC).
  • When processing an Italian birth, marriage or death certificate, it must have been issued less than 6 months ago otherwise it will be rejected. If you require a new copy we can help with obtaining this for you.
  • Whilst the original document is usually required, some educational certificates can be processed using a scanned copy. Please contact one of our consultants to check if this is the case for your document.
